What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition where fluid (lymph) builds up in the body’s tissues, causing swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs. The lymphatic system helps remove excess fluid and supports the body’s immune defenses. When it becomes damaged or obstructed, fluid cannot drain properly, resulting in swelling and discomfort.
What’s happening in the body?
Your lymphatic system normally drains excess fluid, waste, and toxins.
When it’s damaged or blocked, fluid can’t drain properly, it collects and swelling develops.
Common causes
● Cancer treatments (especially lymph node removal or radiation)
● Surgery or injury
● Infections affecting lymph vessels
● Chronic venous problems
● Sometimes people are born with a weak lymphatic system (primary lymphedema)
Symptoms to look for
● Swelling in an arm, leg, fingers, or toes
● Feeling of heaviness or tightness
● Reduced movement or flexibility
● Skin feeling tight, thick, or hard
● Clothing/jewelry feeling tighter than usual
Why early treatment matters
If untreated, lymphedema can worsen over time and lead to:
● Increased swelling
● Skin changes
● Higher risk of infection
Is it permanent?
Lymphedema is usually chronic (long-term), but it can be managed very effectively with the right care.
Lymphedema Physiotherapy
Lymphedema physiotherapy focuses on managing swelling and improving function for individuals living
with Lymphedema. Through specialized, evidence-based techniques, physiotherapy helps reduce fluid
buildup, enhance circulation, and support long-term symptom control.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to properly drain fluid, leading to persistent
swelling. Physiotherapy plays a key role in managing this condition by promoting lymph flow and
preventing complications.
Benefits of Lymphedema Physiotherapy
● Reduces swelling and heaviness
● Improves mobility and daily function
● Decreases risk of infection
● Enhances overall quality of life
● Supports long-term management
