“Positive energy is attracted to positive energy.” – Deborah Day

What happens during the initial assessment and treatment?

Prior to coming to your appointment you would have filled out questionnaires online with some of the questions we will be talking about during your visit. However the following is a list of some of the items we may take a look on depending on your situation.

  • Assess your posture
  • Check for Diastasis Recti – abdominal separation
  • Check your lower back, pelvis and hips for movement and function
  • Do an external assessment of abdomen, pelvis, vulva and surrounding area for scars, prolapse, etc
  • Conduct an internal vaginal and/or rectal assessment to assess the muscles internally and provide you with information
  • Depending on the information gained during the assessment will dictate the course of treatment. This will be discussed with you and your therapist and a plan of care will be implemented.

How many times do I need to come for treatment?

The plan of care is important to follow in order to maximize your recovery. Subsequent visits are 30 minutes in length and generally most people will need 6-8 visits unless it is a more complex case. We advised our patients to book your visits ahead of time to allow more flexibility in your schedule. If you need to cancel, a 24 hour cancellation policy is in effect due to our waitlist of patients needing to be assessed.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

  • List of medications you are taking
  • List of previous surgeries
  • Comfortable clothing
  • A pair of indoor socks, shoes or slippers if the weather is wet

How long is the first assessment and subsequent visits?

The first visit is approximately one hour and subsequent visits are 30 minutes.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

A doctor’s note is not required to see a physiotherapist but your insurance company/extended health benefits through your work may require one. It is important for you to know what your benefits are (how much per visit and maximum per year) and how to submit to your insurance company.

Do you bill directly to my insurance company?

Payment is required at the end of each visit. We provide you with a receipt for you to submit to your insurance company. We strongly recommend that you contact your company and inquire about coverage and amounts.

Do you treat men and how do you assess?

Yes, we treat men. The pelvic physiotherapist are trained to access the pelvic floor either externally and/or internally.

If I am on my menstrual cycle can I come in for treatment or the assessment?

Yes you can if you are comfortable in doing so. As pelvic physiotherapists, we work with women during their cycle all the time.

How long after childbirth should I wait to schedule an appointment?

We recommend you book a virtual visit at 2 weeks postpartum and then wait 6 weeks for an internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles.  You are welcome to book an appointment for an external assessment and treatment anytime after childbirth.

Please do not hesitate to make an appointment or contact our office 905-444-2282 if you have questions or concerns.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel an appointment, we require at least 24-hours notice to respect the physiotherapist’s time as well as for those on our waiting list who are patiently waiting for an appointment. If you need to cancel less than 24-hours due to COVID-19 type symptoms, you will not be charged for the appointment. For any other reason of cancellation, with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full amount of the visit.

Please call the office and we will re-book your appointments.

What is virtual Physiotherapy?

Our physiotherapists are experienced at providing assessment and treatment through secure video consultations. You will receive online forms to complete in advance of your virtual appointment. Please click on the e-mailed link 5 minutes prior to your appointment to make sure your device is working with webcam and audio. If you want to test it out prior to the appointment, we can book a 15 minute discovery call with one of our therapists. During the appointment, the physiotherapist will conduct a subjective and objective evaluation to determine what your issues are and then implement a personalized plan of care to meet your individual goals and needs. Education will be provided regarding your condition, customized exercises, self-directed hands on techniques, behaviour modifications are just a few examples of what will be discussed during your appointment. And the best part is, you can do it from your own home and we won’t be wearing a mask.

Durham pelvic health helped me with my peeing issues and a burning sensation related to my pelvic muscles. Lavanya worked with me to help aid and strengthen my muscles. She genuinely wanted to help rather than take my money. I highly recommend

Thanks to Manu, my labor and delivery experience was incredibly smooth. Her expertise in pelvic and prenatal physiotherapy played a crucial role in preparing my body for childbirth. The exercises and techniques she recommended not only helped alleviate discomfort during pregnancy but also contributed to a shorter and less complicated labor. Her compassionate and supportive approach made me feel empowered and confident throughout the process. I am immensely grateful for her guidance and would highly recommend her to any expecting mother seeking personalized care.

Dr. Amanda is great with my son. She makes appointments very enjoyable and has given us lots of resources to help us. She has given us the confidence we need to tackle his potty issues. The staff are all very nice and the facilities are clean and organized.

In December 2023, I had an appointment with a pelvic floor physiotherapist at this location and my experience left me very overwhelmed and discouraged. I decided not to continue with treatment from this professional. Fast forward 4 months and my urinary issues had become so stressful that I decided to come back here but meet with another pelvic floor physiotherapist. I'm so glad I did! Fortunately, Amanda Mallette had an opening for an initial consultation the day I called and I was able to see her then. I felt very comfortable telling her my issues. She also did read up on what the previous physiotherapist had written about me in December. I was also grateful to her that I didn't need to fill in the initial paperwork again which does take a considerable amount of time. Amanda is definitely very knowledgeable in this field. She was able to discern my great stress over my issues and has been reassuring that together a solution will come into play. I feel heard and am encouraged by Amanda that in time I will be able to do things like I did before menopause knocked me off my feet. If you're dealing with a weak pelvic floor and/or urinary issues, I highly recommend that you see Amanda for guidance and support.

Highly recommend to all mamas post partum! Kowndiya has been a great support providing guidance as my symptoms change. I only wish I had found them sooner to help during pregnancy too to help with hip and pelvic pain.
